Whitburn went into this game knowing that a single point would do for promotion purposes. From the off Dewi Taylor drove up the left wing and put in a cross that James Martin couldn’t get a good touch on and the ball went wide. 8 minutes in a Jack Hamilton free kick came off a defender and landed at Michael Adams’ feet and his shot just missed the top corner. 4 minutes later a Connor McQueenie corner found Jordan Bain at the back post and his fierce drive was brilliantly saved by the Pumpherston trialist keeper – the first of several. A second save followed in the 19th minute when this time he pushed a James Martin shot round the post. He then pushed an Adams’ drive on to the bar after good combination work between himself, Martin Russell and Martin. The opening goal came just after this in the 25th minute when he couldn’t hold a Gary Brass header and Taylor knocked the rebound in. Brass should have scored in the 41st minute (after a quiet section of play) when clean through but the keeper’s legs thwarted him as he tried to round him. The half ended with a Pumpherston chance after Whitburn couldn’t clear their lines but the ball finally ended in Dougie Horne’s arms.

Being only one down seemed to inspire the visitors as they started to pass the ball well though they never really troubled the home goal. Meanwhile Russell had an effort which went over and Taylor was stopped by a great tackle from Gary Maclachlan. However, a good move in the 65th minute saw one trialist set up another and his shot went in off the post. 5 minutes later Bain drove into the box and was brought down by Maclachlan for a penalty which Russell dispatched with the keeper going the wrong way. 3 minutes later a Jack Hamilton cross couldn’t be dealt with by the defence and somehow found its way into the net. Then in the 81st minute Whitburn’s trialist was fouled in the box and again Russell scored from the spot. Pumpherston then got their own penalty but the trialist screwed his spot kick round the post with Horne at the other. In the final 3 minutes of normal time James Martin scored two very similar goals getting through the Pumpherston defence and side footing the ball beyond the keeper in both cases. So, in the end, Whitburn had secured promotion and the 6-1 result was a good reflection on the number of chances created by both teams.
