The 1966 Scottish Junior Cup Final
This was the team's first final appearance and they were playing fellow East Region team, Bonnyrigg Rose. This in itself was quite unusual, being only the second such encounter in cup history (Musselburgh v Arniston in 1922/3 being the other).

It is interesting to note the Centre Forward, Danny Kilpatrick scored in every round except for the very last. As we shall see, in the report below, he was unfit for this game - who knows what might have happened had he been fit! He remains Whitburn's top scorer.
Unfortunately the final replay was something of a let down and it remains to this day the equal worst ever defeat in a Scottish Cup final.

In the first game the teams had drawn 1 -1 with Duncan Henderson scoring for Bonnyrigg and Danny Kilpatrick on target for the Burnie. A crowd of 19,430 watched the first meeting and around 10,000 turned up for the replay.

Brilliant Bonnyrigg Rose powered their way to a magnficent victory over Whitburn in the Scottish Junior Cup Final replay
at Hampden last night. Twin heroes were lan Paterson and Tommy Davidson who snatched two goals each and ran the usual reliable Whitburn defence into the ground.
There were no failures in this Bonnyrigg side. Skipper John Cattenach and Andy Kelly were stand-outs in midfield.
Jimmy McIntyre and Russell Halliday were both outstanding for Whithurn. But, as on Saturday, goalkeeper Sammy Park looked far from fit and was badly at fault with a few of the goals.
The score equalled the record-breaking total set by another East side, Tranent. when they beat Petershill 6-1 in season 1934-35.
Here is how the Bonnyrigg goals came:
17 minutes - Paterson headed home the opener from a Wilson corner.
31 minutes - Henderson cracked in a 20 yarder which deflected past Park off Stevenson's boot.
65 minutes - A Paterson pass to Nisbet was taken smartly by the inside right, who headed over Park's hands.
68 minutes - Davidson rose above Whitburn's defence to head home a Titterton cross.
74 minutes - Paterson brilliantly lashed home a great shot from 12 yards.
82 minutes - Davidson ran through on his own to beat Park all ends up.
Alec Penman got Whitburn's consolation goal two minutes from time.
As an interesting footnote to this, it should be noted that the Whitburn keeper, Sam Park, struck his head on the post early on in the game, and it is a strongly held belief that this injury left him dazed (if not concussed). As a result he was not at his best between the sticks in conceding six to the Rose. This may partly explain the statement that he was at fault for some of the goals.
